“The Ant and the Grasshopper” is one of the most famous fables attributed to Aesop, a storyteller from ancient Greece. It teaches a powerful lesson about hard work, preparation, and responsibility — values that remain as important today as they were thousands of years ago.

📖 The Story

Once upon a time, on a warm summer day, a happy-go-lucky grasshopper hopped about in a green field, singing and enjoying the sunshine. Nearby, a hardworking ant was busy gathering grains of wheat and carrying them to his nest.

“Come and sing with me!” said the grasshopper.
“Why waste your time working on such a beautiful day?”

The ant paused for a moment and replied,
“I am storing food for the winter. You should do the same before the cold comes.”

The grasshopper laughed. “Winter is far away! There’s plenty of time to relax.”

All through the summer, the ant worked hard, while the grasshopper sang, danced, and played under the warm sun.

Then came winter.
The fields were covered with snow, and food was nowhere to be found. The grasshopper grew hungry and cold. He remembered the ant and went to her house.

“Dear Ant,” he said, “please share some of your food. I’m starving!”

The ant looked at him kindly but said,
“I worked hard all summer while you sang and played. Now it’s time for you to face the result of your choices.”

The ant closed her door, and the grasshopper realized his mistake.
From that day on, he promised himself that he would work when it was time to work — and play when the time was right.
